In our little dungeon room at AWP, there were rows and rows of little magazines just like us. Then there was Harper Perennial. I stopped by and talked to the friendly young man working the booth, who said that people had been snarky to him about his company's larger status. I knew what he was talking about--it was the similar to the attitude we'd been getting from poets (and hey, I love you, poets!) who would stop by our booth, pick up our magazine, and then, after realizing we only published fiction, drop it like it was on fire. The Harper Perennial guy looked like he'd been beaten with a stick, the poor thing. So they have money! Right now, it seems important to support all publishers, big and small. Money is relative. Size is relative. Books are good.
And wouldn't you know it, Harper Perennial just started this awesome blog, which they will send to you once a week--52 stories a year. Come on. That's just nice of them, don't you think?
Click here for the goodness. This week's story is by Willa Cather.

That guy was actually really nice, AND Harper Perennial is actually publishing 8 short story collections this year - 4 from classic authors and four contemporary efforts in the fall. The four summer collections will have one story from one of the contemporary collections at the end like an advertisement (ie, the Tolstoy will also have a single story from Holly Jones).
Sorry to have missed the Avery table.
See, what lovely people! Short story teasers!
Sorry to have missed you too, Dan! I felt a bit overwhelmed by the whole shebang and therefore never strayed far from the booth.
As they say, next year in Denver!
